In the mid 1990s, Rachel Williams wanted to ensure that her two young daughters were passionate about and proficient in science and math. To drive interest, she developed two puzzle piece characters to introduce these complicated concepts in a fun and engaging way. 

Fast forward to 2012, Rachel and her daughters—one completing a degree in Biology and the other a rising star in the financial services industry—decided to bring the characters back to life. Since that time, the trio has been on a mission to engage a new generation of little learners in STEM and, at the same time, change the course of a nation.

Career and Technical Education is distinguished by its focus on programs that nurture 21st-century skills and provide a clear connection to STEM careers. Yet Early Childhood Education (ECE) programs lack the same rigor and focus on STEM skills as other CTE programs, placing these students, who are overwhelmingly female, at a distinct disadvantage.


There’s no such thing as a STEM job because all jobs require a level of STEM proficiency

Research indicates that girls suffer from math and science anxiety at a higher rate than boys. Lack of confidence in their math and science skills and abilities is a major barrier for students enrolled in early childhood education courses, limiting not only their effectiveness as future educators but also their ability to pursue other STEM-related career opportunities.


ECE graduates lack preparation for the new reality of the workplace

National STEM education goals dictate an emphasis on STEM early in the pipeline—well before kindergarten. Yet, the vast majority of early childhood educators enter the classroom having had no STEM coursework at all and with limited opportunities to gain the relevant skills after they enter the workforce.

GETTING STARTED WITH PAIGE & PAXTON

Licensing Requirements 

The Honey Bee Company LLC offers Paige & Paxton curricula under a licensing agreement. The fee for access is based on forty (40) ECE students which may be applied in multiple classrooms across a district. The use of Paige & Paxton curricula, including lesson plans and printables, is restricted to the students(s) and the sites(s) under the agreement. Paige & Paxton texts do not fall under the licensing agreement. Use of the text is at the organization’s discretion. The licensing fee is due a minimum of two (2) months prior to the student orientation and training.

Student Orientation and Training 

Instructor preparation is at the core of our mission to change the trajectory of an entire generation by making STEM easy to teach and easy to learn at the beginning of a child’s educational experience. For this reason, implementation of Paige & Paxton curricula begins with training. The training is for ECE students who will access and present the ECE Instructional curriculum. However, recognizing that the opportunity for professional development in elementary STEM is scarce, schools typically open the training to other instructional staff, and we encourage the practice.

Pre- and Post-Intervention Assessments 

Paige & Paxton is constantly evaluating its program using widely accepted instruments to assess outcomes for students. The Draw A Scientist or Draw an Engineer assessment is administered at the beginning and end of Paige & Paxton programming. The pre- and post-tests are simple to administer and do not require any special equipment.
